Kitsap Pride brings families to Evergreen Park

By LYNSI BURTON

For Thomas Oliver and Jeffrey Chandler, taking their 8-year-old son Zyreal to the Kitsap Pride Festival on Saturday was just another family outing in the park.

“We’re just like an old married couple,” Oliver said of he and his partner, describing weekly church outings and dinners with grandma. “This is probably the most gay thing we do every year.”

That sentiment was shared by other attendees of the Pride Festival at Evergreen Rotary Park, who said the celebration was Kitsap’s only recognition of gays and allies, heterosexuals who support equal rights for gays.

Elaine Priest, who came with friends and children, said the low-key and fun environment is why the Kitsap festival appeals to her.

“You see other people with their families,” she said. “That’s what I like.”

The event marked its sixth year at Evergreen Park — in the early years starting about 13 years ago, the festival was much smaller and took place in Seabeck and Port Orchard. Now the festival includes more than 40 vendors, play space and face painting for children, live music and a drag show and attracts up to 500 people, said Marcie Mathis, an organizer of the event.

Melissa Evans, who came with her daughter Amanda, said gay culture has become more open in Kitsap. About 10 to 15 years ago, people were not as comfortable expressing their identity, she said.

“It’s just not as taboo as it used to be,” Evans said. “I just feel a lot more open than I used to be.”

Nonetheless, the gay culture in Kitsap is not vocal and visible as what might be seen in Seattle, Amanda Evans said.

“We’re pretty open. It’s not to the point where you have to be out and loud,” she said.

Amy Parkhurst, who came with her family, said this was the first year she’d heard of the Kitsap Pride Festival and she wanted to show her support.

Playing with her young neice, Ava Wilson, near the children’s play area, Parkhurst said she also appreciates the family-friendly environment of Kitsap Pride.

“It’s great, we love it,” she said. “We think there should be a lot more.”

Kitsap County Celebrates Pride

Bremerton, WA – Kitsap County will celebrate Pride on Saturday, July 18, 2009 with both old favorites, and new features. Festivities are being held at Evergreen Rotary Park in Bremerton, from noon to 5PM.

The Kitsap Pride Network organizes the annual event for the local lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and ally community, and the 2009 planning committee has been working hard to put together an event that exceeds expectations and showcases the talent and supporters in and around our community. Bring family & friends and be ready to enjoy a fabulous day at the park.

Although this year’s Kitsap Pride is being held in the same beautiful location, this year several great new features have been added, thanks to suggestions from previous year’s participants.  We’ve expanded our area for families with children to come and enjoy by adding a bouncy house. There is a covered picnic area for eating, gathering to socialize or just people watching. If you want to be closer to the action there will also be tables nearer the stage, or you can bring a blanket or stadium chairs and make your own viewing area. Don’t forget the Frisbees!

ALL FAMILIES MATTER

We’re really excited this year to be having a “Kid’s Zone”, hosted by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of Bremerton. Also, the Kitsap Safe Schools Network is sponsoring a Teen Space that will be hosted by The Q Center. The Q is a local drop in center for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and allied youth from 14 to 19 years old.

Non-stop entertainment from the stage, sponsored by Red Star Events, will include live music from local favorite Inga Nova and the heavy soul and funk sounds of the Kim Archer Band. Plus, local band Vera the Ghost.

This year’s Community Partner organizations the Kitsap County HIV AIDS Foundation, Kitsap PFLAG, Kitsap Safe Schools Network, Positive Solutions, The Q Center, Kitsap Unitarian Universalist Fellowship and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

Our vendor marketplace should be a bustling avenue of GLBT Support & Education Information, Local Businesses and Merchants. This year there will be jewelry, apparel and accessories. Many of our favorite vendors are returning again this year, as well as a few new ones. Stop by the Kitsap Pride Network booth for some great pride merchandise and this year’s t-shirt.

Celebrate Pride

It’s not too late to save the dates. That’s right, DATES! Kitsap Pride Festival is almost here. This is the 40th anniversary of Stonewall, so even more reason to come out and celebrate with your Kitsap Gay, Lesbian, Bi, Trans and allied community.

Based on your valued feedback from last years festival, we are excited to announce a few new additions to this years festival.  New and returning entertainment. More diverse food choices along with the usual favorites.  New stage placement, which allows for a dryer and more family friendly time. Bigger “Kid Zone” including a bouncy house. Bring your family, your friends your four legged kids too! Don’t forget your appetite for great food and even greater fun!

So here’s the where and when of Kitsap Pride

Where: Evergreen Rotary Park in Bremerton
When: Saturday, July 18th 2009  12pm-5pm

Entertainers

Kitsap Pride is excited to bring to the stage some great local talent.  We’ve got a great new layout to encourage folks to dance and soak up sounds and sun.  Plan to bring your chairs and blankets and enjoy the day.  Thanks to Red Star for sponsoring the stage.  Check out the Red Star Pride Party – it’s a fabulous way to wrap up your pride.

Kitsap Pride is a community driven, non-profit event. This means that we cannot pay any performers. Instead we asked that you donate your time and give back one day out of the year. Back stage you will find drinks and snacks as well as tables, chairs and a dressing area. We ask performers to check-in with the stage manager 30 minutes before performance time. Our final schedule will be posted one week before event. On behalf of our community, Kitsap Pride thanks you for your involvement and appreciates your patience as we are unpaid volunteers that do the very best we can.

Time onstage is limited and we do our best to fit everyone in. We ask that all performers keep in mind the diversity of the crowd, including young children, without compromising their art. And we encourage outrageous, larger than life costumes and performances. Please let us know if you need anything!

The entertainment begins at Noon and ends at 5pm.

Contact us if you are interested in performing.  We are sorry that our budget doesn’t allow us to pay.  We can usually help with some expenses and feed you!
