Kitsap County Celebrates Pride

Bremerton, WA – Kitsap County will celebrate Pride on Saturday, July 18, 2009 with both old favorites, and new features. Festivities are being held at Evergreen Rotary Park in Bremerton, from noon to 5PM.

The Kitsap Pride Network organizes the annual event for the local lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and ally community, and the 2009 planning committee has been working hard to put together an event that exceeds expectations and showcases the talent and supporters in and around our community. Bring family & friends and be ready to enjoy a fabulous day at the park.

Although this year’s Kitsap Pride is being held in the same beautiful location, this year several great new features have been added, thanks to suggestions from previous year’s participants.  We’ve expanded our area for families with children to come and enjoy by adding a bouncy house. There is a covered picnic area for eating, gathering to socialize or just people watching. If you want to be closer to the action there will also be tables nearer the stage, or you can bring a blanket or stadium chairs and make your own viewing area. Don’t forget the Frisbees!

ALL FAMILIES MATTER

We’re really excited this year to be having a “Kid’s Zone”, hosted by St. Paul’s Episcopal Church of Bremerton. Also, the Kitsap Safe Schools Network is sponsoring a Teen Space that will be hosted by The Q Center. The Q is a local drop in center for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and allied youth from 14 to 19 years old.

Non-stop entertainment from the stage, sponsored by Red Star Events, will include live music from local favorite Inga Nova and the heavy soul and funk sounds of the Kim Archer Band. Plus, local band Vera the Ghost.

This year’s Community Partner organizations the Kitsap County HIV AIDS Foundation, Kitsap PFLAG, Kitsap Safe Schools Network, Positive Solutions, The Q Center, Kitsap Unitarian Universalist Fellowship and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

Our vendor marketplace should be a bustling avenue of GLBT Support & Education Information, Local Businesses and Merchants. This year there will be jewelry, apparel and accessories. Many of our favorite vendors are returning again this year, as well as a few new ones. Stop by the Kitsap Pride Network booth for some great pride merchandise and this year’s t-shirt.

Outrage

Kitsap Pride presents OUTRAGE on Friday, July 10.

Academy Award nominated filmmaker Kirby Dick (“This Film Is Not Yet Rated”) serves up a searing indictment of the hypocrisy of closeted politicians who actively campaign and vote against the LGBT community they covertly belong to. “Outrage” goes deep into the private lives of some of our nation’s most powerful policymakers and political officials, unabashedly revealing their hidden lives.
Through first person interviews with ex-lovers and LGBT commentators, the film details the harm our political representatives have inflicted on millions of Americans, and examines the media’s complicity in keeping their secrets. Well known activists from Larry Kramer to Elizabeth Birch to Rodger McFarlane to politicians including Barney Frank and former NJ Governor Jim McGreevey, all go on the offensive as they describe the destructiveness of the closeted and, especially, the Washington closeted life.

While ‘outing’ closeted gays has long been considered out of bounds, Dick explodes this nicety as he shows the relationship between closeted lawmakers and their anti-LGBT voting records. From the beginning of the fight to gain funding for HIV/AIDS education and treatment, through the current battle over marriage equality, closeted gay lawmakers repeatedly voted against their communities.

This is a benefit for Kitsap Pride

Pride Party ’09

Pride season is here.  I know many of you made it to Seattle this past weekend.  The ferry I was on was packed with pride goers.  I even got the ferry to wish everyone off to the parade to have a good time as we pulled in to Coleman Dock.  Next year we should have a pre-party on the morning ferry!  The parade was fabulous and the Pride fest at Seattle Center was nuts!  Up on the hill was crazy too.  Our two favorite DJ’s were spinning together at the Cuff Complex for Sunday’s Block Party.  Last year’s Pride Party DJ Martin “Funkybear” Petersen and this year’s Pride Party disc jockey DJ Matt Stands.  We are so excited to bring Seattle caliber DJ’s to you.  We work hard to create a club night that you would expect in a much larger city.  More than that we are proud at the response from you for turning out each month and every month. Kitsap Pride is Saturday, July 18th at Bremerton’s Evergreen Park.  This year’s theme is “Our Rights – Your Rights – Human Rights.”  Red Star is a major sponsor this year at $1,000.  This is where the money goes.  After expenses and some investments we give back to the community.  There is a great line up that will be posted soon at Kitsap Pride’s website.  Pride starts at noon and goes to 5pm.  Stop by the Red Star booth for fun & prizes!  We have a beautiful new t-shirt design that we expect to sell out of so get yours early!  The day doesn’t end there; at 9pm doors open for Red Star’s Pride Party!

This year’s party will be bigger and better that any year before!  We have so many surprises up our sleeves.  We expect to have well over 200 people this year.  The place will look swanky with exciting lighting and posh décor.  DJ Matt Stands, resident DJ at Seattle’s Cuff Complex, returns to spin the dancefloor into a frenzy like he did for our MAYDAY Party.  We’ll be at the Eagles again but don’t worry if you don’t recognize the place.  Cover is still only $5 and doors open at 9pm.  The door and bar are CASH ONLY.  There is a typical bar ATM downstairs and a Chase ATM located on the same block.  Susan will be rocking the bar again and keeping the lines down.  The Pride Party is 21 and over only.

Enter the Eagles upstairs at 205 6th Street.  If you drive, there is plenty of parking available in the area.  Most of it is free and the word on the street is that the nearby pay-lots are not checked that late.  The lot next to the Eagles on Washington is reserved for their members – the good people who allow us to turn their hall into the biggest gay bar around.

Celebrate Pride

It’s not too late to save the dates. That’s right, DATES! Kitsap Pride Festival is almost here. This is the 40th anniversary of Stonewall, so even more reason to come out and celebrate with your Kitsap Gay, Lesbian, Bi, Trans and allied community.

Based on your valued feedback from last years festival, we are excited to announce a few new additions to this years festival.  New and returning entertainment. More diverse food choices along with the usual favorites.  New stage placement, which allows for a dryer and more family friendly time. Bigger “Kid Zone” including a bouncy house. Bring your family, your friends your four legged kids too! Don’t forget your appetite for great food and even greater fun!

So here’s the where and when of Kitsap Pride

Where: Evergreen Rotary Park in Bremerton
When: Saturday, July 18th 2009  12pm-5pm
Also, before you join us at Kitsap Pride, you are also encouraged to join us in walking in support of pride at the Bainbridge Island 4th of July parade.
